Microbiome & Immune System

“Studies suggest that the maintenance of a healthy gut microbiome is inseparable from host health; there is, in fact, a bidirectional relationship between the gastrointestinal microbiome and the innate immune system.”

-Shanahan F, van Sinderen D, O’Toole PW, Stanton C

This means that the health of your gut, or microbiome, and the strength of your immune system are directly correlated. One affects the other. How does this work?

The health of your gut flora helps protect your immune system from reacting and causing inflammation. If your gut flora is dysbiotic, then your mucosal layer is more than likely damaged. This means your gut lining can't protect your body from substances like inflammation-causing lipopolysaccharides thus directly affecting your immune system. The inflammation that your innate immune system creates affects the balance of the microbiome and results in intestinal diseases.

It's literally a cycle that ebs and flows.

This is why it’s ideal to keep your gut microbiome healthy, so that it can keep your immune system strong! But if you have ever taken antibiotics or have eaten the SAD (Standard American Diet) you more than likely have gut dysbiosis. I know I did.

Here are a few ways to support a healthy gut environment:

  • Manage your stress and relax - the body needs that Parasympathetic Nervous System to engage

  • Pre and Probiotics

  • Remove fried foods from your diet, get yourself an air fryer ;-)

  • Eat a wide range of vegetables and fruits

  • Sleep well. Introduce a bed time routine to help wind down. This includes removing blue light and or screen stimulation at least an hour before bed.
